AirIoT is the outcome of an ongoing research project titled "IoT enabled smart cities: Pollution, Health and Governance" at IIIT Hyderabad. There are two major objectives of this research project. The first is to set up an internet of things (IoT) network for monitoring air pollution in urban conditions in Indian cities, and the second is to develop a web-based spatial data platform for dynamic geo-visualization of the data from the IoT network to provide citizen advisory and governance. The data is gathered on air pollution, along with temperature and humidity. The device for air pollution monitoring has been designed in-house at SPCRC and is robust against the issue of data loss due to connection and power outages. The device maintains an offline cache in the event of an outage. The stored data is offloaded in bulk once the power and communication are restored. The testbed pollution data is collected at the Gachibowli area of Hyderabad. This measurement region represents a typical fast-growing urban scenario in India. This research project argues for a densely deployed network of IoT-enabled PM monitoring devices using low-cost sensors. The low-cost sensors were calibrated for seasonal variations using a precise reference sensor.
